Emoticons

The Netherlands, 2007

14 year old Saskia has no friends and suffers from harassments at school. At home she vents her anger and frustration playing violent computer games. 16 year old Sanne publishes poems about loneliness and a yearning for love on the internet. Samantha was raped at 15 and is facing the trauma through aiding teenage girls on web forums. Zineb chats with her family in Algeria. Debbie and Inge met on the internet after their mothers died of breast cancer. They maintain an intensive email contact since. For these girls, the internet serves as a cure to pain and loneliness. Emoticons is a fabulous documentary following girls who switch the disappointing reality with a full-of-meaning virtual space.
