Gila Almagor

The International Women´s Film Festival will hold a festive tribute for the celebration of the 70th birthday of actress and writer, Israel Award winner Gila Almagor.

The event will include a screening of selected scenes from films in which Almagor played during her long career, which included all genres of Israeli film. In addition, we shall host academy and film researchers for a conversation about the Israeli woman character as it is reflected in the different parts played by Gila Almagor.

Almagor started playing in Israeli cinema in 1960 with the film Blazing Sand, and since then she has played in over 40 films, playing dozens of different types of characters – Israel-born, Mizrahi and Ashkenazi immigrants, single women, wives and widows, mothers, prostitutes and psychologists. The changing cinematic face of Almagor reflects the changes in the Israeli woman in the personal, family, social and professional aspects. A new examination of the different roles played by Almagor draws a complex and fascinating picture of Israeli women.

In the event The Israeli Women of Gila Almagor, a discussion will be held about these women in the historical and social contexts in which they appeared, the background from which they arrived and how they influence and are influenced by women’s place in Israeli culture and society.

The discussion will be lead by Yael Munk, a film researcher and lecturer specializing in Israeli women's film. Other participants: Gila Almagor herself, Uri Klein - the film critic of "Haaretz", Moshe Mizrahi, who directed Almagor in the film The House on Chelouch Street and Prof. Hanna Herzog, sociologist and head of the Gender Studies Program in Tel Aviv University.
