Vital Signs

Canada, 2009

Following her grandmother's death, Simone returns to her hometown Quebec. The loneliness and emptiness continue to cling to her even when she is with her lover, and she decides not to go back to her studies at the USA but to volunteer in a hospice. Simone gradually changes and becomes devoted and addicted to a lethal combination of self annulment, altruism and cleansing before-death moments. Director Sophie Deraspe, also responsible for the subtle monochromatic cinematography, created a beautiful, slow and contemplative film, that wanders back and forth with Simone in snowy roads, and approaches death in order to try and find answers and a reason to life.
