Women Art Revolution!

USA, 2010

In the mid-sixties, a group of women artists, curators, and scholars came together to protest the exclusion of women’s art from museums, galleries, and academia. Parallel to the anti-Vietnam protests, and inspired by the civil rights struggle, they began operating in a number of focal points across the U.S. They succeeded in establishing the Feminist Art Program at the Californian Institute of the Arts – the first academic platform devoted to the subject. After that came magazines, workshops, and traveling exhibitions, all of which served to raise consciousness and interest.
Lynn Hershman Leeson was an active participant in this revolution. Since the end of the 1960s she has documented her fellow travelers: artists, curators, scholars, and critics who fought for their unique voice to be heard. The personal testimonies of artists such as Judy Chicago, Martha Rosler, Howardena Pindell, and many others, are woven into archival footage from the era to create a comprehensive and moving survey. This is not just a historical narrative, but an ongoing documentation in which we meet the participants at different points in their lives and see how their perspective has evolved. The result is an intelligent, rich documentary film, which offers an experience that is at once enlightening and moving.

Artist and curator Sari Golan Sarig will lecture after the screening on Israeli feminist art (details)
