A Common Thread

France, 2004

Director Eléonore Faucher's fine and impressive first film follows seventeen year old Claire, who discovers she is pregnant. For months she is hiding her belly and tells she has cancer and the fattening if a result of chemotherapy. Five months pregnant, she decides to give birth secretly and give the baby for adoption immediately afterwards. She finds shelter from the sad reality at Mme. Mélikian's, a tailor of expensive tissues who mourns her young son's death in a motorcycle accident. As Claire's belly grows, the women discover one another, day by day, stitch by stitch. A special and deep relation is tied between the two, strengthened by Mme. Mélikian's experienced hands and Claire's hesitant ones.
