The RunawaysUSA, 2010
The International Women's Film Festival hosts Lethal Lesbian! The Runaways was a band that was active in the years 1975-1979. They did Rock 'n' Roll, they were young, they were girls only. Their music was not new or anything we have not heard before, but they influenced the world of music incredibly. Before them, it was not customary for a woman to hold a guitar, not to mention play one. Along with producer Kim Fowley they paved the way for many bands that would follow (yes, the Spice Girls too). The 1970s are known to us as the good years of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, but also of the Sex Pistols. The girls took Bowie's style, combined it with lyrics of Iggy Pop and screamed them like the Sex Pistols (only less out of tune). Years after the breakup, Bass player Joan Jett released the feminine Rock 'n' Roll hymn “I Love Rock 'n' Roll”. Floria Sigismondi directed the biographic film about the band, starring the current youth idol Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga) as Joan Jett, and the wonder girl Dakota Fanning as singer Cherie Currie. The film, like any good biography, adds and removes selected details, distorts the facts a little bit, but supplies 107 minutes of fun, talented girls, an interesting story and a lot of music. “Lethal Lesbian” is a festival of quality lesbian Israeli cinema that has for a target to encourage and to develop varied creation of women. Collaborating with the International Women's Film Festival in Rehovot, we chose to screen this film, the plot of which symbolizes everything we believe in – the first Rock 'n' Roll female band that made it on its own, in order to show that women too can Rock 'n' Roll and they do it just fine.
