Borderline

Canada, 2008

Borderline tells the story of Kiki in different stages of her life: her experience with her hospitalized mentally-ill mother and with her loving yet firm grandmother who took her place, and her constant escape to alcohol and drugs as compensation for warmth, compassion and affection that were brutally denied from her. At the age of 30, after many lovers and no emotional connection, Kiki is ready to face the biggest challenge of her life: learn to love herself. The childhood penetrates the present, not systematically or linearly, but as a wound which refuses to heal; and it would take her a lot of courage to gain control over the self destruction mechanism.
Borderline, an adaptation of a successful Canadian novel, is an expressive, provocative and frantic film, dealing with trauma and with the possibility to surpass monsters from the past.
