The Milk of Sorrow

Peru/Spain, 2009

Opening Film
Fausta is ill with a sickness called “the milk of sorrow”, suckled from her mother’s breast milk. The illness is not caused by bacteria or infection but by abuse and raped Peruvian women suffered during the years of terrorist struggle. The song her mother sang to her since she was a child taught her about the past events and she continues to preserve them in her own body. Her mother’s sudden death causes a chain of unexpected events that dramatically change her life. She is forced to deal with her horrible fears and to go on a journey of liberation.
Peruvian director Claudia Llosa created a spectacular, moving and powerful film about women’s trauma passing through generations. The Milk of Sorrow won the Golden Bear for best film in Berlin Festival 2009.
