Mermaid

Russia, 2007

Alisa, an imaginative girl living by the sea, has the ability to make wishes come true. She went to a school for exceptional children, sang in a choir and dreamt of ballet. At the age of 6 she stopped talking, at 17 she moved to Moscow and at 18 she disappeared. The magical alluring film, that has already been called “Russian Amélie”, brings a special world with visual innovations to the screen. Director Anna Melikyan creatively draws a modern romantic fairytale, soaked with surrealist humour, which celebrates the imaginary world of a girl. Mermaid won the Grand Prix in the Sofia Festival 2008, the FIPRESCI Prize at the panorama in Berlin Festival 2008 and the Directing Award of World Cinema at Sundance Festival 2008.
